Greetings! We are just back from our trip, which was wonderful, and I thought I would share a few photos (plus I am too jetlagged to string two sentences together). I took 1000, so consider this an awesome feat of restraint. Some of these are romance related — things I found in SA bookstores — and a few are personal. I hope to get back to real romance blogging later this week.

In Durban, pron is considered romance?
(Note the Penthouse volumes on the top right)

We ate incredibly well.

Not "the wild" exactly, but kids loved this.

A Christian bookstore (giggle)

My youngest knows what sex is now.

Lovely covers in Joburg

On safari. Waiting for a herd to pass.

So beautiful.

Afrikaans romance. Whites only?
I tried to find a translation for the intriguing sounding “My Liefling is ‘n Wolkeman”. I am guessing that this attempt (not mine) was not all that successful:
Severe Danie de Wet has six daughters, about whom he is like a volstruismannetjie watch. Anke is his “probleemkind” because of her love for Braam Venter, who won Euro’s Dublin, but he wishes ill to his meat-Merino and his girl. By Nora Roberts

Well, hello...

Just like markets in rural Maine!

Cape Town restaurant
I hope you all had a great few weeks.

Such great photos! What was that vervet monkey doing in your room and did he do any damage?
Yay! Welcome back, Jessica!
I love the photos. Please post more when you have a chance.
Wow, these photos are gorgeous! It looks like you had a fabulous time. Love your Barbara Cartland moment.
@Ann Somerville: I had opened the door to the deck, and he swung in. the rest of the family was asleep. I just stood there watching him. Luckily, we had nothing around he wanted, so he turned around and left.
@SarahT: Be careful what you wish for…
Last week I read about a fatal shark attack on a tourist in Cape Town, so I was just a little bit worried that you might go to the beach and never be seen again. I’m glad you’re back!
Welcome home! You were missed. What a great sampling of pictures. Can’t wait to see more.
Beyond thrilled you’re back!!! HOOYAH and all that good stuff. 1,000 pix? I got a walk on water camera for Christmas that is still in the wrapping. Bad me!
Can’t wait to hear all — enjoy being home. According to dd, it is COLD in the Great White North just below the longest undefended border
Amazing photos! And wow, there’s my book, just a few spaces down from the Penthouse pron. Awesome! LOL
Glad to have you back. Looks like you had a fabulous time!
Nom, nom, nom – it does look like you ate well! And having a monkey in my room probably would have caused me to pass out – even if the little fellow you spent time with looks like he was used to people.
LOL – and I love that you took pictures of books! That’s the ultimate sign that you’re a romance reader. You go to Africa and take pictures of books
Welcome back!!!! *throwing party*
That market looked just like markets in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela
And of course, what Wendy said–books and bookstore hopping while on vacation = romance reader.
Love the pictures! The one with the lions is lovely. And I’m glad to see you managed to fit some bookstore-hopping into the vacation.
Welcome back. Nice photos! Esp your Barbara Cartland moment, even though I don’t know what that means, and that lion picture. Wow. And what is up with the cum bookstore? This looks like such an amazing trip.
Eeee baby elephants! You totally should post more pics. Also, jealousss
The food looks awesome. And… heh. Yes I studied the pictures. “Boy spice”? O_o
Welcome back. It looks as though you had a fabulous time, and more pictures of said fab time would be welcome.
Funny, that title caught my eye, too. “My sweetheart’s an outdated music player”?
Welcome home, Jessica! Your vacation looks absolutely amazing from those photos! Thanks so much for sharing.
I wonder what spices make up that ‘Chicken Licken’ spice mixture? Too funny. My mouth is watering looking at that photo of the meal at the restaurant. Yum.
Boy spice?! I want me some of that.
And did you see the Labia Theatre in Cape Town?
What gorgeous photos! Love the elephants especially.
Am curious what flavor “green fish” is, among others.
*clings*
Welcome back! Looks like an excellent time was had by all…
Thanks for pulling yourself away from the food, the wild animals, the funny store names & books titles, and the gorgeous weather! I’m sure northern Maine was equally sunny & beautiful when you drove home…
(Psst: Here’s a little secret. We’d have missed you desperately if you’d stayed there a moment longer.)
Welcome back Jessica! Looks like you had a great time – the safari looks like it was an extra special experience. Thx for the sharing the pics.
Welcome back!!!
Welcome back!
What wonderful pictures. I especially adore that “Barbara Cartland” shot.
I’m so glad you had an excellent trip.
What a trip of a lifetime!! I look forward to more pics and stories. And I’m laughing at the eclectic selection in this post. I think my favourite is your two sons next to the baby elephant.
Thanks for sharing the awesome photos!
I missed your posts. *pathetic sigh*
1) Barbara Cartland must be turning over in her grave.
2) They must have sold out of all my books.
3) Welcome back.
Ahh, so jealous. Terrific pictures, especially Mr Monkey. My first thought was “How cute.” then I immediately thought, “Oh Lord, wild animal in your room, not cute! not cute!”
@Laura Vivanco: But obviously the monkey was nothing next to the the shark attack! Dang!
South African bookstores – better stocked with romance than my local independent bookstore.
Good to see you back – you’ve been missed.
Looks like you had a fabulous time! Welcome back!
So happy to have you back, Jessica! I’ve been going through withdrawal symptoms during your absence.
Thanks for the pic sharing! Love yalls little monkey friend. Welcome back!
The liefling book: My dearheart is a dreamer ??
Welcome back jessica! Looks like you all had a wonderful time. Love the baby elephants
Ooohh, yum, that food!
Elephants are my favourite animals and I would absolutely love to get some pictures with some baby ones because I think they’re just adorable! I wish I could have one for my back garden, might just try and smuggle one home on the plane or something.
