@Jessica & @Jane

I don't see why that can't be possible. Book reviewers don't or can't write fiction. Film critics don't or can't direct or write films. Music critics don't do music let alone knowing how to sight read music. So I don't see why food critics should be any different.

I probably say that because I don't know the cooking basics myself. :P

Now that I have re-read your review, I remembered what I wanted to bring up:

<blockquote>A couple of things didn’t work for me. For one thing, Miranda doesn’t know the first thing about cooking. This gives Adam an excuse to take her back to his apartment and give her cooking lessons, but the idea that a major big city food critic can’t even poach an egg threw me out of the story. Food critics need to be great writers and have great palates, as Miranda does, but I am pretty sure most of them have at least some cooking school or kitchen experience.</blockquote>

It's funny that you say this because I sew and I hate the people on Project Runway who can't sew. Having said that there seem to be a number of industry folks who really have few sewing skills but have vision. But I can see how Miranda's lack of cooking is taken to the extreme in this story.

(not really a disagreement as much as a comment)

I am trying so hard not to go the bookstore until I read at least ten of the books on my TBR, but reviews like this don't help! I've had it on my wishlist for a while now.

Thanks so much for the review, Jessica! This one sounds like fun. I'm on the verge of starting a cooking blog in addition to my book blog, so this sounds like just the book to do a cross over post with! :wink:

Louisa,

Thanks for stopping by. Glkad you liked it!

Ana,

There IS conflict, but none of the "I got a stubbed toe once and I will never walk again" kind of internal conflict.

Janicu,

I did not realize Ann showcased it. I love her Jax series. I hope you like it!

Nicola,

Thanks for stopping by!

Finally, I am posting this for JanetW, who is being subject to hateration from my spam protector for some reason:
<em>
"You know a book review -- and a book -- is outstanding if you take most of your morning hike to quote from it, discuss it, wonder it about and generally agree ... I have to get my hands on it! My step-brother is an executive chef for a big historical restaurant complex in SoCal and we got the grand tour the last time we visited him. I remember being astounded by the use of space -- surely worthy of submarine conditions. I love the big walk-in lock ups, the sausage making operations -- so I am dying to read about creating magic behind the curtains.

Lastly, and without giving anything away, when you said "misunderstandings", I always think of Jane Austen's Emma when I read that: just a few words at a picnic shattering the sensibilities of so many people. You know I think I must like "low conflict" books too -- like Nora Robert's Key of Valor: the h/h really didn't have a lot dividing them (well except for his multi-millions LOL).

Ditto what Louisa Edwards said ..."</em>
