I've read 3 of the Malloren series and none of them have blown me away on the romance front. Maybe it's because the H/H ARE more rational and believable? I've liked them very much though; assured well-researched writing.

Another Jo Beverly fan. Besides the Mallorens and CoR, she did some good medievals, too.

Let me add my voice to the chorus and encourage you to seek out Jo's backlist. She's really one of the best historical romance authors out there. Fire up that Kindle, girl. You have some shopping to do :-)

Oh my friend. You are in for a treat then. I haven't read this one but the ones I read in the world of the Mallorens are very good (Rothgar rules, totally concur) and I would recommend you to go back to the start and read My lady Notorious - one of my favorite romance novels ever. This sort of intelligent plotting, good writing, careful historical research is what made me fall in love with romance in the first place.

and welcome back! *grin*

You haven't read a Jo Beverley before? Rly?

I love love love Jo Beverley. Her Malloren series are right up there on my keeper shelves. I adore Rothgar - he's in my top 5 heroes of all time.

His book is Devilish but it is closely tied to Secrets of the Night where we first meet Diana (his love interest).

He is a major character in the 1st 3 Malloren books. I read book 4 and 5 first and then went back and read 1-5 - I found I got so much more enjoyment out of Rothgar's story after reading all of the previous books. His character is revealed all through the series and I adore him (er, I may have mentioned I have strong feeling for Rothgar before....).

There have been 2 other Malloren books after AMUM also.

Her "Company of Rogues" series is also excellent - these books are set during the regency - just before and following Waterloo. There are 12 rogues who formed a boys club at Harrow and their stories are told in this series. Some of the rogues have died and one of the rogues has his story as a secondary romance throughout a number of books - so there aren't 12 books. There are other not-strictly-rogues-books in this "world" where some of the rogues characters turn up (eg, Hazard and Skylark) and there is an ongoing story arc which goes through most of the books although each is stand alone. What is interesting is that the rogues aren't all earls and dukes. There is an earl and a duke (of course!) but there are plenty of misters too (in fact, the leader of the rogues is a mister). So, you get all sorts of interactions - politics, horse breeders, spies, lords, poets and musicians. The stories aren't your typical regency fare either.

AMUM is a good book but it is by no means Jo Beverley's best (IMO) - if you liked this one, there's more more more!!!

I highly recommend them all.

PS Hope you had a nice holiday and it didn't rain too much.
