Review: Devil’s Bride, by Stephanie Laurens

May 20 2009 Published by under Reviews

My Take In Brief: Sometimes I love a romance because it is new or different. I loved this one because it was all the regular things you expect from romance, done (mostly) right.

Devil's Bride

Cover comment: Above is the original cover. I couldn’t resist showcasing the original stepback, with the Duke and Duchess of Grunge. Matching pirate shirts, ahoy!

Series? Yes. Devils’ Bride (1998) is the first in the long-running Cynster series. The 15th, Temptation and Surrender, was published in March 2009, and Laurens’ website indicates there are 5 more to come.

Look at the front cover of the romance you are reading right now. Did you know that there is a 97.9988978% chance that if there’s a hero on the cover, it’s this guy:

He’s got us covered, ladies. And let me say up front that I found a number of these covers at Nathan Kamp: Book Covers, maintained by CT. So thanks CT (and I apologize in advance for a post you may not enjoy).

Joint Review: Tempt the Devil, by Anna Campbell

May 17 2009 Published by under Reviews

Tumperkin’s Take:

Tempt the Devil by Anna Campbell: High Concept Romance

Tempt the Devil is the second book I’ve read by Anna Campbell.  The first was her debut, Claiming the Courtesan, which was the subject of some online controversy on account of a forced sex scene between the courtesan heroine and the ex-client hero (a Duke, naturally).  I was non-plussed by the forced sex but considerably irritated by the entirely charmless Duke.  Tempt the Devil, Campbell’s third novel, again features a courtesan heroine and client hero.

Contest NOW OVER: The Last 11 Books I Bought and Why

May 07 2009 Published by under Uncategorized

THIS CONTEST IS OVER. THANK YOU.

Author Victoria Janssen has been blogging and twittering about online promotion, and she’s got me reflecting on why I buy books.

Below I list my last 11 purchased romance novels, and why I bought them. It looks like online promotion was only directly responsible for 1 of them (#6), with personal recommendations (via blogs, twitter, and in person) leading to 6 purchases. Indirectly, I have been impacted by online promotion to the extent that the people recommending the books to me have been. I’m under no illusions about the limitations of consulting conscious memory on this issue, but it’s all I’ve got.  Also, I’ve posted before about how unrepresentative Romancelanders are among romance buyers, but I thought it would be fun and interesting, if not exactly scientific, to ask people to share similar info.

So, comment on this post listing the last 5 romance novels you bought (no ARCs or freebies) and why you bought them, and you will be entered in a contest for a $15 gift certificate to a online book merchant of your choice. Contest ends Tuesday May 12 at midnight EST.

Here’s my list:

With Friends Like This…

May 06 2009 Published by under Blogs and blogging, Genre musings

I just read 5 Reasons Romance Novels Aren’t Trashy, by Liz Abinante. I had never heard of BitchBuzz, but some undercover investigation (ok, clicking the About page) revealed that it’s a “privately owned, independent, global women’s lifestyle network”, which shoots for “the happy medium between hardcore feminism and the fluffy, out-of-touch women’s magazines that dominate the internet today.”

I admit I puzzled for a moment over the notion that women’s magazines dominate the internet, but I was excited about finding another romance booster.

In this short piece, Ms. Abinante offers “five great reasons to head on down to the bookstore and pick up a romance novel”.

Now, I’m an attentive reader, so the second sentence, “Don’t look at me like that – they aren’t all bad” prepared me for a qualified endorsement. By the end, I found myself pondering the difference between a qualified endorsement and an unqualified insult.

Consider the 5th reason, “The Writing Is Actually Not That Bad.”

?

And then…

“You have to admit, writing a well crafted sex scene takes an immense literary gift – either that, or a thesaurus of euphemisms.”

You mean, I could write a hot, non-giggle-inducing sex scene if I just surf over to Thesaurus.com? Thanks for the tip!

The 4th reason is simply “Paranormal Romance” which Abinante credits for being less formulaic and having better covers. Anyone who reads across romance subgenres would hesitate to compare them like that. You know I could have you crying blood tears in 3 bad paranormal covers flat.  And what exactly is the relationship between a book and its cover? I know there’s an idiom in there somewhere…

3. “The ability to explore sexual fantasies in a safe atmosphere.”

Unlike pornography, which can sometimes feel overproduced and artificial, reading allows the imagination to wander, and you can experience sexual acts exactly how you desire.

This sentence confused me on so many levels. For one thing, “experiencing sex acts”, involves, um, actually having sex. It’s a slightly different activity from reading, at least the way I do it. But more to the point, lots of romances contain no sex at all (Something tells me Christian inspirational romance authors rarely begin describing their writing with, “unlike pornography…”) . And many women — even women who read romances — enjoy porn. Gasp! Even artificial and overproduced (?) porn.

And then, this…

It may seem like something small and pathetic, but for some women, romance novels are a way for them to express their sexual agency and learn about their own desires and fantasies.

“Small and pathetic”. Abinante has captured my self-image perfectly! Sign me up for that Twibe!

Review: Burning Up, by Sarah Mayberry

May 06 2009 Published by under Reviews

My Take In Brief: A sexy and sweet romance with truffle oil, brush fires, and baby wombats!

9780373793846

Cover Comment: Sophie has short pixieish hair. And this cover model…doesn’t.

Audio note: I listened to Burning Up on audio, and while I liked the narrator, Gabra Zackman, who does a lot of Blazes (Mayberry, Jade Lee, Stephanie Bond, etc.), I should warn you that this New York based actor does an Australian accent which would not be very convincing to anyone who has an ear for these things.

Read the first few pages on Mayberry’s website.

Setting: Australia, present day, almost entirely in a mansion in the hills.

Plot: After cooking in her boyfriend’s family restaurant for over a decade, Sophie takes a month long job as personal chef to Lucas Grant, a playboy actor with a knee injury.

Heroine and Hero: Sophie is a very good person whose safe, predictable life gets a shake up when her boyfriend dumps her. Lucas is a famous sexy actor, a charming cad.

Conflict: Lucas’s traumatic childhood prevents him from forming emotional attachments.

Word on the Web:

AAR, Katie Mack, B+

“While the casual-affair-turned-serious plotline isn’t new to series romances by any means, not a lot of authors write this evolution as effectively and enjoyably as Mayberry does.”

Racy Romance Review:

This is my 3rd Blaze by this author and I have yet to be disappointed. I can’t remember the last time I could not put down an audio book, but it happened immediately with this one. Granted, the alternative was grading papers, but I found myself taking the dog for extra walks. I actually tried to listen to it while playing cards with my kids, until they shamed me into turning it off.
