THIS CONTEST IS OVER. THANK YOU.
Author Victoria Janssen has been blogging and twittering about online promotion, and she’s got me reflecting on why I buy books.
Below I list my last 11 purchased romance novels, and why I bought them. It looks like online promotion was only directly responsible for 1 of them (#6), with personal recommendations (via blogs, twitter, and in person) leading to 6 purchases. Indirectly, I have been impacted by online promotion to the extent that the people recommending the books to me have been. I’m under no illusions about the limitations of consulting conscious memory on this issue, but it’s all I’ve got. Also, I’ve posted before about how unrepresentative Romancelanders are among romance buyers, but I thought it would be fun and interesting, if not exactly scientific, to ask people to share similar info.
So, comment on this post listing the last 5 romance novels you bought (no ARCs or freebies) and why you bought them, and you will be entered in a contest for a $15 gift certificate to a online book merchant of your choice. Contest ends Tuesday May 12 at midnight EST.
Here’s my list:
1. Ain’t She Sweet, Susan Elizabeth Phillips ($1 thrift table at supermarket)
Reason: It was there.
2. Devil’s Bride, Stephanie Laurens (Kindle)
Reason: I have no idea why. I knew it had been on AAR top 100, always wanted to read this ubiquitous author.
3. Dead and Gone, Charlaine Harris (Kindle)
Reason: Hooked on series. Will read until Sookie Stackhouse is dead or immortal, whichever comes last.
4. Manhunting, Jennifer Crusie (Kindle)
Reason: Semester ended, wanted reliable comfort read. Also motivated by desire to do a Mad To Miss It blog post about it.
5. The Tycoon’s Rebel Bride, Maya Banks (Kindle)
Reason: Karen Scott Tweeted something about it. I had been wanting to read another Maya Banks, not her erotic romance.
6. Dare to Love, Jaci Burton (Kindle)
Reason: Burton tweeted about it. I ended up on her blog, felt like a contemp, and the description intrigued me.
7. False Colors, Alex Beecroft (Kindle)
Reason: Met Sarah Frantz in New Orleans who recommended it
8. Captain’s Surrender, Alex Beecroft (Kindle)
Reason: Confused it with False Colors. Oops!
9. Tempt The Devil, Anna Campbell (Kindle)
Reason: Tumperkin suggested it. We will jointly review it next week.
10. Wicked Lovely, Melissa Marr (Kindle)
Reason: Book Smugglers gave me three suggestions for a guest post on YA and I chose this one.
11. The Dominant Blonde, Alisa Kwitney (paper, used)
Reason: Suggested by DA Janine. I have a Pavlovian positive response to Janine’s recommendations.
So how about it? Care to throw down your own data? (Authors are welcome to share, too).

2. Gobsmacked by LB Gregg- LB is my friend and I wanted to support her first release

4. Butterfly Tattoo by Deidre Knight. SB Sarah gave it a much recommended two thumbs up.

I am so pimping out this contest on my blog

This is a great contest. Mine are listed in reverse chronological order.
1. Going Down Hard by Tawny Weber (print Harlequin Blaze). I’m trying to broaden my romantic horizons a bit and research the categories I am thinking of writing for. What better research than actually reading them?
2. Jaguar Night by Doranna Durgin (print Silhouette Nocturne). Ditto.
3. Angels Blood by Nalini Singh (ebook). This was based on recommendations on Twitter and Goodreads.
4. One Silent Night (ebook). Mainly because it had a 100% micropay rebate at Fictionwise. I enjoyed the first few Dark Hunter books, but I read this one mainly out of habit.
5. Passion Unleashed by Larissa Ione (ebook). Finishing up the Demonica trilogy. I bought the first because of a recommendation on Twitter and a kick-ass sale at Fictionwise. I paid full price for books 2 and 3 because I enjoyed book 1 so much.

Let’s see – my last five books. Well – now, you are making me confess something here. You see – I made a proclamation that I wouldn’t buy any more books until I’d read 5 from the TBR pile – and then it would only be 1 book until I’d read 5 more. But you then – this was the middle of April when the books I wanted weren’t out yet and I’d gotten my April books – so I could do that kind of thing. The, as one would expect, May came. And there were a whole bunch of books I wanted that were published in May. I had 4 of them in my shoppers basket, but the blogger started offering the very ones I wanted so I decided to wait a bit. But – there is a Chapters very close to where I live and I went in there on Sunday because it was a nice day and I wanted to get out……
1)The Conqueror by Kris Kennedy because Wendy, the Superlibrarian gave a high marks…..and she’s tough. Plus it was a great price
2) Silver Falls by Anne Stuart because this wasn’t one of her previous RS series and I have this fascination with the way Anne Stuart write such ambiguous heroes
3)To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt because I love her books.
4) A Knight’s Captive by Lindsay Townsend because it was a special price and I have the first book. And because I liked the cover
I got a number of books that I ordered on line – too many to name but the fifth one I bought in the store
5) Crash Into Me by Jill Sorenson because of presence online and I like RS.

Hmm. New or used?! I’m totally weak at the thrift store and the library “withdrawn” store. I’ll go with new, since those are more conscious and less random.
1. Men of Alaska: Animal Attraction (Paige Tyler) (ebook) – I enjoyed Modern Day Vampires: Vampire 101 when I reviewed it and thought I’d give her werewolf book a try.
2. Librarian by Day (Paige Tyler) (ebook) – Recommended on multiple blogs, plus see #1 about having read Vampire 101 and enjoying it.
3. At Grave’s End (Jeaniene Frost) – Read the first book in the series, had the 2nd already, needed this one.
4. Magic to the Bone (Devon Monk) – Recommended on multiple blogs. Hmm, plus maybe I won the sequel and it’s on its way to me. It blurs.
5. Soul Song (Marjorie M. Liu) – It was next up for me to read in Dirk & Steele and I saw it at my local indie bookstore… and it had a Nathan Kamp cover. I was doomed.
#5 by JC on May 7, 2009 - 7:03 pm
Suzanne Brockman, Into the Night – I was told I need to read it.
Suzanne Brockman, Into the Fire- I liked the first Brockman Book
A book I can’t remember the title of- It had a recommendation for JR Ward on the front and I wanted to try something new.
Beyond Heaving Bossoms- Because I like the Blog and because everyone is talking about it.
Lisa Kleypas- Because I wanted a comfort read.

By amazing coincidence, I just bought several romances in the last couple of weeks. Of course, this is true of most weeks, but anyway:
1) The Butterfly Tattoo by Deidre Knight–I read several positive reviews online, and that triggered the buy. I’m glad I did.
2) The Surgeon’s Lady by Carla Kelly–an autobuy author for me.
3) To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt–I’d bought the others in the series, and semi-automatically bought this one.
4) The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley–I bought this based on reader comments on AAR.
5) Her Ladyship’s Companion by Evangeline Collins–Also bought based on review/commentary on AAR, and so not worth the price.
#7 by Angela on May 7, 2009 - 7:40 pm
Oh Lord! This is hard because I haunt library book sales. I have probably bought close to 30 books in the last two months without hitting $20. What do you think? Is that like rescuing stray dogs?
Here’s my list of books I actually bought bought (over $1.00! or brand new!)
1. Vice Avenged: A Moral Tale by Lolah Burford (used from abebooks.com) — Because lit. crit. book that mentioned it in the first chapter.
2. Vanquished by Hope Tarr — Read about it on a message board or somebody recommended it. I can’t remember it was on the running list of books I keep
3. The Sins of Lord Easterbrook by Madeline Hunter —- Glommed the first part of the series and have been waiting for Christian’s story since I read the first book.
4. The Last Hellion by Loretta Chase— is a favorite of mine and when I saw this had been reprinted, I had to have it.
5. Heather and Velvet by Teresa Mederios—Another favorite author, another reprint of an earlier book. Had to have it!

To be perfectly honest, more than half of what I read I get from the library. My book budget is only so big. But there are about half a dozen authors who are auto-buys for me. Because of some bizarre alignment of the stars, almost every one of my auto-buy authors released a book on April 28. My budget was not happy, but what could I do? Auto-buy means auto-buy. Thus there are more than 5 books listed here:
1. The Surgeon’s Lady by Carla Kelly at eharlequin (because you can’t buy it anywhere else until June 1 and technically I bought this on May 1).
2. To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt at Fictionwise. I bought it on the 28th, but couldn’t download it until May 1.
All of the rest I bought in paper on the 28th.
3. At Last Comes Love by Mary Balogh
4. Till there Was You by Lynn Kurland
5. A Scotsman in Love by Karen Ranney
6. The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley. Up until now, JA was not one of my auto-buy authors. But I was so intrigued by this, especially after she was interviewed at TGTBTU that I decided to buy it rather than check it out from the library. So here’s a case where online promotion made a difference and I bought a book. The other 5 books I would have purchased no matter what was said or not said online.
Oh, and I hope you review Devil’s Bride. I think it is Stephanie Lauren’s best book to date.
#9 by dharmagirl on May 7, 2009 - 8:31 pm
1. Manhunting, Jenny Crusie
Your review reminded me how much I adored this novel when I read it last summer:) I want to own and re-read all of Jenny’s books before presenting on a panel with her at RWA so I don’t make some major faux pas…
2. Bet Me, Jenny Crusie
A colleague presented on this novel last month, and while I already read it a few years ago, I wanted to read it again for the food scenes.
3. Undead and Unwed, Mary Janice Davidson
A friend recommended I add this to my list of vampire romances, though it’s more chick-lit than straight romance
4. Definitely Dead, Charlaine Harris
I love the Sookie books, as you know, and am working my way through the series…
5. From Dead to Worse, Charlaine Harris
ditto.
I see I’m big on author loyalty, as well as buying, rather than borrowing, books I plan to critique/teach/use as writing models.

1. The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley: bc of the unique hero (I didn’t actually read any reviews bc I was afraid of spoilers so I don’t really consider this a buy based on a recommendation)
2. Lover Avenged by JR Ward: bc I am also addicted no matter how much it hurts.
3. False Colors by Alex Beecroft: I love m/m romance and saw the great recommendation on Dear Author (was as good as advertised).
4. Uneven by Anah Crow: After False Colors I looked at other m/m recommendations on Dear Author and found this book also highly recommended (intense, but also really good)
5. Always a Scoundrel by Suzanne Enoch: I have enjoyed many books by this author and saw that her latest got good reviews so I picked it up, wasn’t disappointed.
#11 by azteclady on May 7, 2009 - 8:47 pm
Well, I don’t think my data will help any.
I bought them all during a trip to the UBS, off my TBB list:
Pamela Clare’s Ride the Fire–because Wendy and Kristie had a thing going, blog to blog, about it.
Patricia Gaffney’s Wild at Heart–because is one her historicals that a lot of people recommend, and I still haven’t read anything by her *hangs head in shame*
Justine Davis’ Fire Hawk–because I’m trying to get the old Avon series complete to do a marathon read/review of them; I love some of her old categories and some of her more recent single titles, wanna see how the older titles compare.
Anne Stuart’s Black Ice–because I’m trying to get all those titles in the TRB so I can read them without jumping the order. The reason they are in the TBR to begin with is Karen’s rants about the changes in the later novels in the series.
J.R. Ward’s Lover Enshrined–to replace the one I lend my neighbor (God love her) that she can’t find; given that she return the other five, I think she probably tossed it in the trash :sigh:
[See? no help here]
#12 by Mari on May 7, 2009 - 8:48 pm
1. The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie – Jennifer Ashley – I have never read any books by this author before but I became interested in this title after I read a couple of interviews with the author and excerpt she provided. I was intrigued by the hero with Asperger’s syndrome.
2. Mariana – Susanna Kearsley – I don’t read a lot of time travel romances but this was highly recommended to me by a friend with similar tastes.
3. Unmasqued – I read an interview by this author in regards to a more recent release and I was curious about this book when I looked up her backlist. It a romantic retelling of the Phantom of the Opera with a revised ending (she ends with the right guy).
4. Simply the Best – Shirley Jump – This is a new author I like. I read one of her books that was in a bundle for my Sony Book Reader. The story was so good I decided to buy one of her more recent titles.
5. Last but not least….The Harlequin Presents Bundle from the Sony Book Store for my reader. I absolutely still adore the HP line. Those are amongst the first romances I have ever read if you don’t count the Anne Shirley – Gilbert Blythe love saga of the Anne of Green Gables books!
#13 by KristieJ on May 7, 2009 - 9:21 pm
OK – non-related topic comment here – *fist pump* Yeees on all the posters who got The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie.
Carry on
#14 by Kate on May 7, 2009 - 9:29 pm
Jessica, I’m enormously glad you post interesting articles. Also please don’t enter me – I’m trying not to acquire things that collect dust of all ilk – I’m adding my list because 1. I’m curious about what I’ve recently bought and 2. I’m curious why people buy anything.
1. The Duke trilogy by Celeste Bradley – the third one was nominated for a RITA and I can’t just dive straight into the third without reading the other two.
2. The Spymaster’s Lady and My Lord and Spymaster by Joanna Bourne. Because apparently I’m the only person alive who hasn’t read them (and well worth it, by the way.)
3. A Bride for His Convenience by Edith Layton. I’d read His Dark and Dangerous Ways and relatively enjoyed it, so thought I’d try another by the author. Also since I found it for free on Paperback Swap (does that count?)
Um. Um.
4. Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas, bought because Ana raves buckets about Sebastian. (Also The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever in the same purchase, since I was curious about a non-Bridgerton Julia Quinn.) Both of these were purchased in advance of a rainy Portland weekend when I knew I’d be doing nothing except indulgence reading after returning to the US from out of country (read: jetlagged to hell and back.)
5. I’ve somehow managed to make a list of five into a list of eight at this point. Oh. Tall Tales and Wedding Veils by Jane Graves/Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas, both because they’d gotten relatively good reviews in the blogosphere and because their premises looked interesting and at least a little different from the norm.
So there it is…my list of five/nine. Please forgive me if I am lying – it is unintentional. I am not at home right now.
#15 by Kate on May 7, 2009 - 9:30 pm
KristieJ, I am waiting impatiently for The Madness…I’m glad to hear so many good things about it!
#16 by ReacherFan on May 7, 2009 - 9:51 pm
To Beguile a Beast because of the good reviews
When He Was Bad because I love Shelly Laurenston
Bound by Blood by Evie Byrne because I like how she writes and it looked really good (it was) an ebook
Tempted at Midnight by Jacquie D’Aessandro because I liked the summary and it looked entertaining
Defender by Cathrine Mann because I’m looking for another romantic suspense author I like and figured I’d give her a try.
If I don’t know an author, I try it based on the story premise and if I enjoy it, I’ll buy more from that author. Some I find are good then bad then good again, so I do stop reading some authors I used to like.
#17 by Shannon C. on May 7, 2009 - 9:56 pm
the last five romances I bought, from most recent purchase to least.
1. To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt – I love this series and I’ve been looking forward to this one.
2. Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre – I think I can blame online marketing for this one, but also I adore the author.
3. Tomorrow by Samantha Kane – Autobuy. Though I do recall seeing someone mention it somewhere, which surprised me because I didn’t realize she had anything new coming out.
4. The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan – I don’t know if this counts as romance either, but I know several romance bloggers blogged about it, so I’m putting it up here. I also bought it because of the online hype.
5. The Mage by Jean Johnson – Another series I adore.
#18 by Keira G. on May 7, 2009 - 11:18 pm
The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt b/c a friend recced it.
Too Wicked to Tame by Sophie Jordan b/c of the fire engine red cover and back blurb. Sucker for beauty/beast tales.
Compromised by Kate Noble b/c of cover, no time to check anything out, ultimate impulse buy. Looked like spring/summer.
The Rake’s Inherited Courtesan by Ann Lethbridge b/c it title sounded like a lot of fun… I hear it’s not about a rake or a courtesan so afraid now to open it… lol
The Sins of Lord Easterbrook by Madeline Hunter b/c of blog review by Dear Author.
Too Good To Be True by Kristan Higgins b/c it was recced in a forum.
#19 by Jessa Slade on May 7, 2009 - 11:34 pm
This is why I’m enjoying Twitter. I saw your tweet which brought me to this informative survey. As a newbie author, this is important for me to know, so thanks for compiling. My contribution:
Bad To The Bone, Jeri Smith-Ready: Found the first book in the series through the Fang Fur & Fey site and thought it was great, so had to have book 2.
Running Hot, Jayne Ann Krentz: Devoured all the other contemp Arcane Society stories, so autobuy.
Demon Bound, Meljean Brook: It fell off the book store shelf into my basket, I swear. Um, along with the other 6 before this one.
Magic to the Bone, Devon Monk: Cool cover, then I found out she’s a local-to-me author so I feel even better about loving the story.
Beyond Heaving Bosoms, SB Sarah & Candy: No need to explain this one, right? Truly LOL funny.
#20 by limecello on May 7, 2009 - 11:51 pm
I want to do this because I want the challenge of remembering the last 5 romances I bought.
1. Hard and Fast – Erin McCarthy. I love her books and really enjoyed the first in the series. Also, I couldn’t resist a heroine named Imogen.
2. Lessons of Desire – Madeline Hunter
3. The Sins of Lord Easterbrook – Madeline Hunter
[I bought 2 and 3 for the same reason; I was lucky enough to win a contest and knew I'd be getting the other two. I have this thing for series. I "hate" them, but if I have one, I must have them all. Which is why I "hate" them, really - no true reason.]
4. Blue Eyed Devil – it was a bargain book @ B&N. I’d been waiting all year for it to go on sale. I wanted it. And now I own it. (I love Lisa Kleypas)
5. Billionaire Extraordinaire – Leanne Banks – because a) I love Leanne Banks and Silhouette Desire; it was one sale – Harlequin had free shipping, and it’s part of the Man of the Month series. All win.

Hmmmm.
1. Under Fire, Jo Davis… because I liked the first one, and hey, firemen.
2. Sea Lord, Virginia Kantra… because the first 3 books were FAB
3. The latest Krentz/Quick Arcane society paperback… because I was at a signing and didn’t bring any books and I love most everything she writes
4. The latest Alexis Morgan… because ditto on the signing, and I liked the first book of hers that I read
5. Lover Avenged, JR Ward… because I can’t not.
All continuing series, and not a single new-to-me author– although Alexis Morgan is a recent add to my “in favor” author list– which I tried on Jackie’s recc at Literary Escapism.
And Jo Davis is on my list thanks to Stacy, who heard about it from Kati.
Ward was originally a recc from my favorite person at Borders’ and I’ve been reading Krentz forever. Kantra was a find that came out of my Antholopalooza experiment.
#23 by Tessa on May 8, 2009 - 1:53 am
From the most recent…
1. The Conqueror – Kris Kennedy – Wendy and Jane both liked it, and I am trying out the whole ebook thing, so for $2.38, how could I not?
2. Butterfly Tattoo – Deidre Knight – The online buzz was everywhere and again with the ebooks…
3. Jessie’s Girl – Amber Scott – Also an ebook, good review on DA, plus, I mostly read for heroines so F/F seems like a double win. We’ll see…
4. Vision in White – Nora Roberts – Auto buy… What can I say, it’s Nora…
5. Burning Wild – Christine Feehan – She is one of the few paranormal authors I read with any consistency…
I have been buried under thesis and grading and moving, and the end is still a distant hope, so these will probably not be read for a while, but it is nice to know they could be.
=)

I’m going by my Amazon account, but I buy nearly all my Romance on-line so it’s probably right.
1. The Madness of… KristieJ was so enthusiastic about it, and it was an intriging idea – the Asperger’s hero.
2. Second and third of the Lymond books. (Not sure if they count as romance…) I’m reading Dunnett because so many of the people on-line whose taste in books matches mine love her work. So indirectly an internet inspired purchase.
3. False Colors by Beecroft. That was from the DA review. I read romance for the emotion, and tend to have a low tolerance for sex scenes – and this sounded like it came down on that side of the scale – lots of angst, less action. I haven’t got my copy yet, so I don’t know if I’ll like it.
4. Surgeon’s Lady by Carla Kelly. Autobuy author. But I did originally find her through AAR.
5. Into the Fire/Dark of Night by Suzanne Brockmann. I wanted to read them together, so I’d waited for the first till the second was out. I’ve followed the series, and was always going to read them.
That’s an in-spite-of-the-internet buy.
(And that’s back in Jan/Feb. Admittedly, I bought a lot of books over Christmas, and probably had a backlog, but I’m sort of surprised how little romance I actually buy, given how many reviews and blogs I read.)
Just remembered that at some point I downloaded a rugby-themed M&B – again DA had mentioned their existence in a news item. Was really bad, and I’ve blanked on the title and author, though the scene in which the Twickenham screens cut away from a kick at goal to show a couple snogging will stay with me for some time.
#25 by Janine on May 8, 2009 - 3:09 am
1. Butterfly Tattoo by Diedre Knight — Because it sounds right up my alley (angst, bisexual hero, alternating first person present tense viewpoints – I’m so there!) and because Jane and my friend Jen both loved it.
2. Silver Falls by Anne Stuart — because ever since I first read Black Ice I’ve bought every new Stuart book. If only the other books were as good as Black Ice! But hope springs eternal, I guess. Also I felt the DA readership might be interested in a review of this book.
3. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. Because the YA YA YA bloggers raved about it and it won a major YA book award (I forget which). And then it was selected for DA BWAHA, too.
4. Tangle Girls (f/f anthology) by various authors, edited by Nicole Kimberling. I’ve been haunting the Blind Eye Books website waiting to hear news of Ginn Hale’s Wicked Gentlemen sequel and I saw that Jesse Sandoval, who wrote the fabulous “Los Conversos” in the first Tangle anthology had a story in this anthology as well. That right there sold me.
5. Clockwork Heart by Dru Pagliassotti. This steampunkish genre-bender was mentioned in the comments when I reviewed New Blood by Gail Dayton. I was intrigued enough to read an excerpt, and the excerpt intrigued me enough to purchase.
As you can tell from this, I buy on the basis of word of mouth from trusted sources, good past experience with authors, and intriguing excerpts.
That’s a good purchase! And my favorite by SEP (of the ones I’ve read, that is).
LOL! You have no idea how satisfying that is. I hope you enjoy this book, Jessica. I will be very interested to hear what you think.

Just in case someone who has the power to do something about it is reading this post I’ll add that topping my list of books I want to buy and feel thwarted from purchasing is The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie by Jennifer Ashley. Because it’s not available as an e-book.
#27 by Joy Harris on May 8, 2009 - 4:21 am
1 – Fiesty,Lillian – Bound To Please (read her story in an EC Anthology – liked it – it was a short story & I wanted to read a full length book from her.)
2 – Michaels,Jess – Taboo (have been following her since she was e-pub’d and I love her work – steamy)
3 – Jodi Lynn Copeland, Lauren Dane, Kit Tunstall, and Anya Bast – What Happens In Vegas…After Dark:
(have also been following all of these authors e-pub to NY, love their stories & this will tide me over until I get a full length book when each of these ladies – also this is book 2 in the series)
4 – Ready-Smith J.R. – Wicked Game (I saw the author posting on twitter – went to check out her website – was going to buy Bad To The Bone her upcoming release when I saw that it was book 2 in a series, so I bought Wicked Game because I like to read in order)
5 – McAlister,Katie – Noble Destiny – I finished Noble Intentions – loved it – made me LOL – I went looking for like mimded books by her and came across Noble Destiny which is a sequel to NI

Last 5 Romances
5. Beyond Heaving Bosoms – my husband actually bought it for me for Mother’s Day
4. The last Demonica book by Larissa Ione – at the UBS; I was shocked to see it there so soon after it was released. I had been waiting on the ebook to come through Fictionwise.
3. Demon Bound – all ebooks; Fictionwise offered a good deal on books on my wishlist and those were the best deals.
2. Demon Moon
1. Demon Night
Has anyone noticed Fictionwise hasn’t been having such good deals lately? I’m pretty bummed about it. I’ve gotten to where I don’t even like paper books anymore. Ebooks are so convenient.
#29 by Jessica on May 8, 2009 - 6:11 am
Laura, or anyone who knows… what is UBS? I am totally out of the loop on that one! thanks!
It’s so fun to wake up and have all these responses. It looks like Twitter is working as a promo tool for some authors, but reader loyalty to authors and word of mouth are huge, too.

1. Manhunting by Jennifer Cruisie
Two factors (a) your mad to miss it post and (b) being in Borders in Glasgow which actually has a decent sized romance section
2. Bridal Favours by Connie Brockway
Borders had a buy one get one half price deal and I’ve always fancied trying another Brockway.
3. Something Wicked by Jo Beverley
Borders deal – eep! Now I need to buy another!
4. Rules of Seduction by Madeline Hunter
Borders deal (phew) AND I loved the Sins of Lord Easterbrook and wanted to start with book 1 of the series
5. Tempt the Devil
For our review. Chosen cos Claiming the Courtesan was controversial and I was interested to see how the author has developed.
Shameful that 80% of these purchases are all historical romance.

Jessica, UBS = used book store.
Marianne McA, I recently bought my first Dunnett–the first Lymond book. Janine, I enjoyed Clockwork Heart, though it felt rather YAish and I don’t particularly need to read it again. I tried the Kwitney last year after seeing a recommendation somewhere (possibly a DA “If you like…” on funny romances), but didn’t find it funny.
1. Emma Holly’s Beyond Innocence.
2. Pam Rosenthal’s The Bookseller’s Daughter, because I loved The Slightest Provocation and found The Edge of Impropriety interesting.
3. Lisa Cach, on Meriam’s recommendation. (I really liked it, in an Emma Holly sort of way.)
4. Georgette Heyer’s Frederica, on the recommendation of several Gabbers.
5. Steve Almond’s My Life in Heavy Metal, because a friend has outright stolen my copy. (Not really romance, but surprisingly close.)
To make up for the Almond I’ll add:
Maya Banks’ For Her Pleasure, after seeing her name here, I believe. (Bleh.)
Wait, this is a contest, right? No prize for me, please.

Oh! Fun!
Let’s see, I just did a big book buy:
1) Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre. Because Ann is made of awesome and Katiebabs and Carolyn Jean both loved it.
2) True Love & Other Disasters by Rachel Gibson. Because it’s another of her hockey books, and See Jane Score is one of my favorites.
3)A Not-So-Perfect Past by Beth Andrews. Because Wendy the Super Librarian loved it, and she’s such a tough grader.
4) Dragonbound by Jade Lee. It got a good review on AAR and I’ve never read her before.
5)False Colors by Alex Beecroft. Because Dear Author gave it a really good review and it’s a M/M romance.

This is FAScinating.
I often pre-order as soon as I know about a book…which says something about my book-buying habits, I guess. All of the books below, except SILVER COLLAR, were pre-orders.
1) STARGAZER by Claudia Gray.
YA. Liked and read first in series–and that one, have met author, am friend of her agent, who pimped it to me.
2) THE SILVER COLLAR by Mathilde Madden.
Black Lace. Posted on by Tumperkin (whom I’ve never met)–gender issues sounded interesting. Was also interested in it because I wrote some werewolf erotica, and as a comparison to Anna Clare’s FLOOD, also from Black Lace.
3) THE SURGEON’S LADY, Carla Kelly.
Regency. Autobuy.
4) DON’T TEMPT ME, Loretta Chase.
Regency. Autobuy.
5) AMAZON INK, Lori Devoti.
Have met the author; read one of her Silhouette Noctourne books and liked it; she mentioned it on Twitter, and I have a strong interest in classical mythology, so I bought it.

Just came across interesting post on “the cult of the author” which includes some stuff on buying books because you know author from online:

1.) Beyond Heaving Bosoms by Sarah Wendell and Candy Tan (Kindle) because Roxanne St. Claire tweeted about it
2.) My Booky Wook by Russell Brand (Kindle) because he cracks me up so I googled him
3.) Talk Me Down by Victoria Dahl (Borders) because I know her and because SavetheContemporary.com recced it
4.) Flat-Out Sexy by Erin McCarthy (Borders) because SavetheContemporary.com recced it
5.) Bunco Babes Tell All by Maria Geraci (Borders) because it’s awesome!
#37 by Christine on May 8, 2009 - 9:55 am
1. Dead & Gone – Charlaine Whitehead. Once I start reading a series, I can’t stop until it’s over. And I love Eric.
2. Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole. Oh my God! Do you even have to ask why? Have you read her books?
3. White Witch, Black Curse by Kim Harrison. Love this genre and then there’s that whole series issue again.
4. Dark Curse by Christine Feehan. Hello! Series! And I’m researching how to become a Carpathian. (Don’t laugh, you know you want to be one too. Shapeshifting, hot sex, eternal life with a rich, powerful and to die for gorgeous male? Pahleese!)
5. The Twilight Series set from BAM! Read some from the library, some from a friend, then I had to have my very own copies so I could read them over and over again!
#38 by Christine on May 8, 2009 - 10:02 am
Great contest idea, Jessica. I love reading what everyone has been buying and the motivations behind their choices.
1. Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews.
Because I’ve been waiting over a year for this book… and it was worth the wait. I loved it!
2. The Chocolate Run by Dorothy Koomson.
Because every time I see this book in the sidebar at Karen Knows Best, I’m reminded that I want to read it and I finally just clicked over to amazon and bought it. It came to me all the way from the UK, too!
3. Envy by Anna Godbersen. (YA)
My excuse is that I bought it for my daughter, but really, I bought it for me. Partly because the covers to this series are just gorgeous and partly because I read the first in the series and it was a theatrically addictive. This is book three.
4. Passion Unleashed by Larissa Ione.
I bought it for a giveaway on my blog after posting my review of the ARC.
5. Deadly Desire by Keri Arthur.
I own the first six books (read half so far) in the Riley Jensen series, may as well buy book 7, right?
#39 by Theresa on May 8, 2009 - 11:12 am
The first two I ordered just this morning from bn.com:
1. Broken by Megan Hart
I’ve wanted to read something by this author for awhile now, but have never gotten around to it.
2. Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward
I was holding off on buying this one until some reviews started coming out since I didn’t like the last book at all. GoodReads friends convinced me to pony up the $16.
3. Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris
Because I have followed the Sookie series since the beginning.
4. To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt
Ms. Hoyt is one of my favorite romance authors… I will buy anything she writes.
5. Daring Time by Beth Kery
Shannon, who does reviews on GoodReads and LiveJournal GenreReviews, wrote a review that made me want to read it right away!
#40 by Maya M. on May 8, 2009 - 12:27 pm
The reasons for buying are actually more interesting to me than the titles! I’ll play:
‘Just One of the Guys’ by Kristan Higgins – because as an aspiring contemporary comedy writer, I need to look at how people who are good at it do it!
‘Delicious’ by Sherry Thomas – because it’s Sherry Thomas!
‘Getting Rid of Matthew’ by Jane Fallon – impulse buy in the store because I’m fond of British chicklit
‘What a Scoundrel Wants’ by Carrie Lofty – because I’ve been following Carrie’s rise for a couple of years and was thrilled when she sold and released
‘Broken Wing’ by Judith James – because of the megabuzz and words ‘action adventure’ in the description
So, in terms of your original question motivator – I was partially influenced by promotion

UBS=Used Book Store
RfP,
Clockwork Heart was just so-so for me — a conversational review with Maili is forthcoming. I’m sorry that my Kwitney recommendation didn’t pan out for you. I will be very interested to hear your thoughts on The Bookseller’s Daughter which is sitting on my TBR shelf.
#43 by Marianne McA on May 8, 2009 - 2:30 pm
Just to add: the internet sells you books in odd and convoluted ways. I’ve been enjoying the comments, and hence followed Victoria’s link to the piece on ‘The cult of the author’.
The author of that piece used Sartorias as an example of an author whose work she’d bought. I’d read and enjoyed her ‘Crown Duel’ and wondered what the book mentioned was about, so clicked across to her LJ and followed a link to an interview she’d given.
That was an interesting interview about how she writes, and I enjoyed that, and decided to buy the book. And it turned out to be two books, so I bought the other as well. (Hadn’t planned to shop – just to quietly browse for half an hour.)
So you happened to post this, Victoria happened to respond with that, the LJ author happened to use that example, and I happened to have finished the book I was reading just before coming on-line, and was vaguely wondering what to read next.
Don’t know what useful lesson an author could take from that about book promotion – except, I suppose, that it was a good thing that the interview was floating about somewhere in the ether.

1)Doomsday Can Wait by Lori Handeland I’m a fan of Lori’s books, and I enjoyed the first one in this series.
2) The Sword & The Pen by Elysa Hendricks
The review in “RT” made it sound like something I would really like.
3)The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley
Online buzz, and I was intrigued by the hero with a form of autism
4)Salt & Silver by Anna Katherine
I love paranormal romance and again, the “RT” review/description sold me.
5)Eve of Darkness by S.J. Day
Urban fantasy is my favorite genre, and there was great online buzz.
#45 by maered on May 8, 2009 - 6:12 pm
1. Promises in Death by JD Robb – I never miss an in death book.
2. Simply Perfect by Mary Balogh – I just love her writing.
3. To Taste Temptation by Elizabeth Hoyt – online buzz
4. Grimspace by Ann Aguirre – again online buzz and great reviews.
5. Red Gloves by Elizabeth Vaughan – loved her previous series.
#46 by Keishon on May 8, 2009 - 6:29 pm
I’m such an idiot and Twitter isn’t working but don’t enter me in the contest and I couldn’t participate even if I wanted to as I bought only two books based on Trisha’s rec (YAYAYA’s): Jo Nesbo’s Nemesis and Rarebreast (both mystery novels) and that’s been out it for me.
#47 by Sara M on May 8, 2009 - 6:37 pm
1. Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr
I love this series and I bought it right after it came out since Melissa and some writer friends were at a Borders down the street for a signing. It was a fun night.
2. Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk
Loved the first book in the series, so I picked up the second the moment it came out.
3. Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill
I haven’t gotten a chance to read this one yet, but it sounds like a very promising start to a new author.
4. Second Skin by Caitlin Kittredge
I love her characters and writing style, and I can’t wait for her new series next month.
5. The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
The Summoning left off which such a cliffhanger than I had to run out and get this one as soon as it came out. Wasn’t disappointed at all, even better than The Summoning.
#48 by Strangeways on May 8, 2009 - 6:48 pm

5. The Graveyard Book – Neil Gaiman

Mine are in no particular order:
The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie by Jennifer Ashley – Blogger peer pressure. Who hasn’t posted a squeeing review of this book?
The Power of Two by Patti O’Shea – I love talking to Patti on Twitter, and I’ve been in a sci-fi/space opera mood lately thanks to my two recent Susan Grant reads.
Writing the Break-Out Novel by Donald Maas – Because an author friend recommended it. Am I a writer? No, I’m an editor. Do I plan to write a book? No, I only like to edit. But I was a writer at one time, and I still like to know what goes on in authors’ heads.
Eternal Pleasure by Nina Bangs – A TGTBTU review convinced me to buy this one. Dude, it’s about dinosaur shifters. How could I pass that up?
Lover Avenged by J. R. Ward – Because I’m weak, okay? Damn it.
#50 by Jessica on May 8, 2009 - 8:03 pm

3. Desire Unleashed by Larissa Ione – See above.

Darkborn by Alison Sinclair – LOVED the cover! (Kindle edition)
Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward – J.R. Ward ROCKS! I haven’t read it yet cause I’m keeping it for when I desperately need that “fix”. (Kindle edition)
Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side [Hardcover] By: Beth Fantaskey – Read an author guest blog and loved her writing! It’s a YA but totally a romance!
Pleasure Unbound (Demonica, Book 1) [Mass Market Paperback] By: Larissa Ione – I bought these as gifts to give away! I’d already read them before and loved them so much to buy and give away!
Passion Unleashed (The Demonica Series) [Mass Market Paperback] By: Larissa Ione – Same reason as above. I already had an extra copy of book 2 so no need to buy it too!

Why, yes. It’s Emma Holly.
Really, it was a semi-random grab off the bookstore shelf. I thought I’d read all the “Beyond” books, so I don’t normally even look at them, but for some reason I noticed this one.
Janine, for me Clockwork Heart and the Ann Aguirre and Linnea Sinclair books (all the sf/f romance I’ve read lately) are all intelligently crafted and a good lightweight read, but they don’t really stick to my ribs. They all feel underdeveloped, which is partly about my history with these genres. They feel too much like they’re still the same sf novels I read as a preteen and grew out of. Except these have female central characters, which I’d have appreciated back then.
The Kwitney was also in a sort of “smart but not quite right” category for me. Humor’s a tricky thing.

Here are the last 5 I bought.
1. Walk Away (Alpha series, book 1) by Treva Harte EBOOK
I saw a review at TeddyPig’s The Naughty Bits about book 4 in the Alpha series, Home, and was really intrigued by this series. In my ocd way, I had to start this series at book 1.
2. SheWolf by Teresa D’Amario EBOOK
I saw this book over at Ciaralira’s blog a while back, and haven’t been able to get it out of my mind.
3. To Beguile A Beast (Legend of the Four Soldiers series, book 3) by Elizabeth Hoyt
Elizabeth Hoyt is one of my favorite writers of historical romance. Book 2, To Seduce a Sinner is one of my top 5 all time favorite historicals.
4. Hard and Fast (Fast Track series, book 2) by Erin Mc Carthy
Last year’s Flat Out Sexy (book 1 in the Fast Track series) really knocked be for a loop. I’m hoping Hard and Fast will be just as fun.
5. The Rake (Lessons in Love, book 1) by Suzanne Enoch
Last week I went to her book signing, thanks to Wendy, the Super Librarian. I’ve never read anything by this author, but this was the recommendation by some of my blogging buddies.

My last five buys were:
To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt – I love Hoyt’s historicals and she is hard to get hold of in the library system so she is one of the few romance authors who is an autobuy for me.
The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley – lots and lots of positive buzz around the place for this one.
The Sins of Lord Easterbrook by Madeline Hunter – I have really enjoyed the first three books in this series, and I can’t get them at the library so I buy her books.
Wanderlust by Ann Aguirre – next book in the series. Enjoyed the first one so had to get this one.
Once in a Lifetime by Cathy Kelly – I went to a book signing as a fill in for a friend, and enjoyed her talk so bought her book to get signed.

1. A total of 6 Harlequin Presents from back in the 80s and 90s. I lumped them all together because the titles are irrelevent to my buying them. I love HPs, especially the older ones so if I find them for .25 cents each I buy them. These were at the hospital fundraiser table.
2. The 4 Harlequin Presents Extras for this month. Again titles are irrelevant since I buy all of the new ones each month. I love all of the unlikely plotlines that are soooo un-pc.
3 Lori Foster’s The Watson Brothers. Somehow I missed this book. Since I love Foster’s books and it was $1 at the library sale, how could I pass it up?
4. Tempted at Midnight by Jacquie D’Alessandro. I buy all of her historical books excluding the anthologies. This one is part of a series, which I love.
5 Burning Wild by Christine Feehan. I buy all of her books when they come out in pb (except for the comic). Her books get reread.
#71 by Pam P on May 10, 2009 - 5:58 am
1. The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley (always get her books and had to get this right away after my friend said don’t wait and posted at review at The Good, the Bad and the Unread, and it was fabulous as you can see by all the buzz, Usually shop online but couldn’t wait for mail and ran out to get it).
2. To Beguile a Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt – love her books, always get them.
3. Burning Wild by Christine Feehan, interested to see how this new leopard book is and it was there when buying 1 and 2.)
4. The Conqueror by Kris Kennedy – her debut book that sounds good and I love medievals.
5. At Last Comes Love by Mary Balogh – autobuy author, enjoying this series.
#72 by Mary M. on May 10, 2009 - 10:23 am
Um…last five mean I’d need to actually check the shipping dates to know which books were the more recent purchases, and check the title of the huffing pile of non-descript Harlquins I bought at the library clearance sale last week…I’m too lazy to do that, so here’s an approximate lsit:
1. Lover Avenged, J.R. Ward – because I’m a BDB addict (although it is steadily decreasing..
2. Frisco’s Kid, Suzanne Brockmann – finally found a cheap copy on eBay.
3. Forbidden Nights with a Vampire, Kerrelyn Sparks – one of my few auto-buys left. I love this author’s humour and style.
4. Transgressions by Erastes – finally heard the right things abou it to rouse my interest, and I was glad to encourage a new line of M/M books in print
5. One night with a prince, Sabrina Jeffries – library clearance sale (books 2,50$ a kilo), the only romance title I remember from the 30 books I bought. This title was listed in my agenda as one of the SJ books with higher ratig on AZ, so I picked it up.
#73 by Karla B. on May 10, 2009 - 4:37 pm
My five, oldies picked up at the UBS:
1. The Spare by Carolyn Jewel — I liked Scandal by her and I couldn’t resist picking up this earlier title.
2. Heart of the West by Penelope Williamson — I’ve never read her but she makes a lot of best of lists.
3. To Tept a Scotsman by Victoria Dahl — I liked her contemp, Talk Me Down, and since I’m a sucker for historicals …
4. Hidden Agendas by Lora Leigh She’s a new to me author and I know she’s popular.
5. Lily by Lauren Royal No good reason, it was there.
Also in my Amazon cart are several of the recent releases which I chose based on hype/internet reviews.
#74 by Kaetrin on May 10, 2009 - 9:43 pm
1. To Seduce a Sinner (Elizabeth Hoyt) – I was influenced by the online hype about To Beguile a Beast. It made me go back and read The Serpent Prince and the Leopard Prince and To Taste Temptation – which I had already in my TBR pile. So I went on an Elizabeth Hoyt binge and picked this one up.
2. Vision in White (Nora Roberts) – it was in the K-Mart catalogue nicely discounted and I am a Nora whore.
3. Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins)- it was cheap in K-Mart and I’d read a lot about it on DA and other sites. Also I heard it was being made into a movie.
4. Salvation in Death (JD Robb) – did I mention I was a Nora whore? Also it was finally out in Australia as a MMP and discounted at K-Mart.
5. Then Comes Marriage (Mary Balogh) – I had just finished First Comes Seduction and I went nom, nom, nom.
So, I guess I am influenced a fair amount by the internet, huh?
#75 by Lori Ann on May 11, 2009 - 6:25 pm
1. Hard and Fast by Erin McCarthy – I really enjoyed Flat-Out Sexy and couldn’t wait to read the next one in the series.
2. The Madness of Lord Ian Mckenzie by Jennifer Ashley – The online buzz for this book is amazing and I have wanted to try a book by Jennifer Ashley for a while.
3. True Love and Other Disasters by Rachel Gibson – I have enjoyed reading most of Rachel Gibson’s books in the past and thought this one sounded good.
4. Always A Scoundrel by Suzanne Enoch – A read the first 64 pages on the Avon website last month, and I thought it was great beginning, so I had to buy it. I have also read several wonderful reviews for it online.
5. Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas – Lisa Kleypas is my favorite author and I always buy her books.
#76 by Marie on May 12, 2009 - 2:00 am
Silver Falls by Anne Stuart. All her books are auto-buys for me.
The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt. I’ve had this book on my TBB list for a while, and finally decided to go for it.
Lucky’s Lady by Tami Hoag. I stumbled upon an excerpt and was hooked after the first pages.
Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran. Because of the good reviews.
Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas. Love bad boy heroes!
