I started this book a bit ago and finally put my finger on why I stopped reading after I read your review. I think the simplicity of the plot bothered me, because it seemed like the kind of thing that you’d find in a Dungeons and Dragons game. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that–I used to play D&D myself.) But… well… They start out at an inn. There’s a fight. They’re these six people going on a quest for their king. I mean, I kind of expected someone to break out the character classes.
That being said, I did like Archangel , and so I very likely will actually finish this book at some point.

Yeah, I think you really have to read this one for the characters and their interaction.

Thanks for the interesting review – I zipped over to Audible and am downloading it now. Is there any invention better? I mean, how can you not love a great story being told…right in your ear (well, if you use earbuds) any time you want?! I’m always ready for good audiobook recs – it seems they’re not that easy find in romanceland, or am I missing something?

I agree both that audible is awesome, and that they do not have enough romance titles. On the plus side, the latter fact has made me branch out and listen to books I might not have tried otherwise, like this one.

Janine and others recommended Archangel, so I will likely try it. Meljean Brooks’ Guardian have wings, and while they are weird, I love her books.

For me the series delves into issues regarding the use of religious beliefs being used to advance political ambitions- and the little group of friends (Senneth, Kirra, Tayse, Justin, etc) is featured in each book. Some of the secondary characters’ motivations stem from either religion or political ambition of one degree or another. Some books are more romantic than others, but I think these are much more fantasy than the Archangel series, which I’ve not read.

One last thought- Ms. Shinn reminds me of Lois McMaster Bujold in that she uses deceptively simple plots and settings to explore contemporary issues.
