I did not like this book and you articulate pretty well some of the issues I had with it. However, her book The Devil You Know is one of my all-time favorites. I reread it periodically just because I love Bently so much.

I bought this one and started reading it, but just couldn’t get into it. It’s one of the few romance novels I didn’t finish.

Ana — I think I skimmed The Rake when I was going through the AAR top 100, but I know I did not give it due attention (sometimes I need to force myself to take a break, but don’t) and plan to reread.

The hero’s description reminds me of Reggie from The Rake by Mary Jo Putney, one of the best romance novels I read.

That bit about “whore around all night (he sleeps all day)” made me think there should be a rake’s song to complement the one about being a lumberjack. It would go like this:

I’m a rake and I’m not OK,
I whore all night and I sleep all day.

I drink and smoke and gamble
I’m taciturn and alone.
I cough up bloody bile and nearly pass out all the time.

I’m a rake and I’m not OK,
I whore all night and I sleep all day!
